### TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

### DO YOU SUFFER FROM TEST ANXIETY?

If you ever find yourself FREAKING OUT when you get handed the math test and forget everything you have learned. For some tips head to the link below. There are many strategies for you if you do suffer from test anxiety. My whole life I have suffered with test anxiety and get extremely nervous and sick to my stomach and at times forget everything before I take a test. I got help and you can too, don't stress and check out the link.

### TUESDAY

We will not be covering anything new today in class. We will begin our review process for the 6-Week Exam. The test again is Thursday and practice problems have been given to all students. Tonight they will complete the study packet. The test is 2 or 3 problems from each topic we have covered up to this point in the year. It is all multiple choice. Please Please study and be prepared for Thursday.

Today we are going to take a break from finding common denominators and equivalent fractions so we can work on adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators.

*if you need to you can change mixed number into improper fractions before you add or subtract. Just remember to change your answer back into a mixed number*

*if the denominators are the same you can add or subtract as the problem is written*

*if you have a whole number you will have to change it into a mixed number. Subtract 1 from the whole number and then create your fraction so it has the same denominator as the other fraction in the problem. Remember that a whole has the same numerator and denominator*

We will be using what we learned yesterday about EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS to compare and order fractions. In order to compare and order fractions the fractions must have the same denominator. This does not mean you can just change the denominator and you're finished. Sorry. You will have to create new fractions that are both EQUIVALENT and LIKE FRACTIONS.

### DIVISIBILITY

You have to know the divisibility rules, they can be very helpful when trying to figure out factors especially when you are dealing with numbers that are out of your comfort zone like 482.

Divisibility Rules

A number is divisible by ......
• 2 if the last digit of the number is an even number.
• 3 if the sum of all the digits in the number can be divided evenly by 3.
• 4 if the last 2 digits of the number can be evenly divided by 4.
• 5 if the last digit of the number is a 5 or 0.
• 6 if the the number is divisible by 2 and 3.
• 9 if the sum of the digits is divisible by 9.
• 10 if the last digit of the number is a 0.
CHECK OUT THE DIVISIBILITY RAP. Some of my students last year created this to the theme song of "Fresh Prince of Bel Air." The lyrics are below.

divisibility rules gets used in the schools

She gave a couple problems, they were no good
we started having trouble in her neighborhood

So we listened to the rules and now we believing
You can divide by 2 is the last digits even

Divide by 3? It different you see
The sum of the digits has to divide by 3

The rule for 4 is about the last 2 digits
And if you can divide them by 4 do ya get it?

Dividin by 5 is easy you know
If the number end with 5 or 0

To divdide by 6 you gotta say yes
To 3 and 4 with success

Dividin by 9 is like 3 but this time
You add the digits and divide by 9

And then theres 10 its so easy
When the number ends in 0 it’s a breezy

She gave us some problems bout 12 or 13
And we yelled to the teacher “yo white this aint nothing”
Looked at the homework, we were done quick
Knowin the divisibility rules does the trick

### ARE YOU UNDER A MATH CURSE?

Today for the first time ever I read an entire book to my class, each class, yes I read the same story 4 times. I might have it memorized. The "Math Curse" by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith is a great book to prove to kids that math is everywhere and it never goes away.

### 9/14/11 Homework

Tonights homework is to complete Question 5 from the packet. You are being asked to list all the factors of each number. BE CAREFUL AND DON'T LEAVE ANY OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In this the factors of 42 are listed in a T-Chart. This is the method that I find to be the most helpful. It helps most kids be mindful of ALL the factors and not leave any out.

*You know you have listed all the factors when you get to a point and the factor on the other side is either the same number, a consecutive number, or 2 numbers really close to each other.
